Know Who You’re Instagramming: Tassiegrammer

The Big Smoke spoke with the mind behind the aesthetically gorgeous @tassiegrammer to get the story behind the images. Unfiltered.

The Big Smoke: Your Instagram pics are fabulous. If, for whatever reason, you could only save three, which three would you save?

Tassiegrammer: Oh no! Please don’t do that to me! I love all of my pictures because there is more often than not a story or adventure behind getting to where they were taken. But if I have to choose only three …

1. Susan on Mt Wellington

SusanMtWellington

My partner Susan is more often than not with me when I am on my photography adventures and usually becomes the subject of my images (or the ones that I take for her to post on her own account). Susan is so patient and understanding when it comes to me and my cameras and has never complained about how much time I spend (or money I spend) with photography.

This image was taken at the peak of Mt Wellington in Hobart, has quickly become one of our favorite places to go for photography, and is very close to where we live. Up to now, this is my most successful image on Instagram and it was posted on Valentine’s Day, the perfect day to tell a good love story.

2. Russell Falls

RussellFalls

Well before I started @tassiegrammer, I was already obsessed with Russell Falls. When I took this image, it was at a time when I didn’t care about sharing my images with anyone else. I took it just for me. I have revisited this image many times not only because of the composition, but also because every time I look at, I’m enthralled by its beauty.

3. Me above the Clouds

MeAboveTheClouds

Standing above the clouds is quite a feeling. I have seen this view many times on Mt Wellington in Hobart, but have never been able to get as much color in the sky while the clouds have been like this. I took this just before sunset looking due east to get the reverse sunset colors.

The Big Smoke: Can you please tell our readers a little bit about how @tassiegrammer came to be?

Tassiegrammer: I run an online marketing company and specialize in assisting tourism businesses market their websites, as well as assisting them to create successful social media and other marketing strategies.

Photography has been a huge part of my life for many years, and especially since moving to Tasmania about six years ago. My partner Susan and I also run @tassiefoodguide and travel quite often for both work and also just for photography trips. I started the @tassiegrammer account to share some of the images I capture whilst traveling, and since then it has continued to grow.

I now regularly work with tourism organizations and many businesses to create Instagram content to promote Tasmania.

The Big Smoke: Regarding “InstaMoments,” what do you think is the main driver to people coming to @tassiegrammer daily and following you?

Tassiegrammer: I would like to think I produce images which really help to showcase Tasmania and anywhere else I may be traveling, which people like to engage with because they are places they would like to visit and experience for themselves. I spend a lot of time traveling with my partner and also have quite a few friends who use Instagram as much as me who I like to go on adventures with very regularly. We are always looking for new places to photograph and explore and I think this comes through in not just the images I post, but also in the stories I tell of the adventures we go on to capture them.

The Big Smoke: Regarding “InstaFans,” what is the worst way for someone to try and get your attention on Instagram, and what is the best way?

Tassiegrammer: I love to engage with anyone who comments on my posts and also spend a lot of time looking at other people’s feeds and providing positive feedback as much as I possibly can. I try my best to answer as many comments as possible about my own images and love discussing the locations with anyone who is interested in visiting those places themselves. I also like to discuss photography techniques and how a shot was taken or the settings used on the camera. Just like most other people, insulting me because someone has their own personal opinion of what they look for in a photo, or how they feel a photo should or should not be edited, will never get a good reaction from me. Everyone is always entitled to their own opinion just as I quite often have my own opinion about images I see, but I will never directly insult anyone because of a difference of opinion in what I think someone else’s image should be.

The Big Smoke: Regarding “InstaStories,” what is the main story you like to tell through your images?

Tassiegrammer: Many of the images I post are from places which many people would be able to get to quite easily if they wanted to. Many people say that social media posts are the highlights of people’s lives, but behind each and every image that I post there is an adventure or a story to tell about how I was in the place I was photographing. I genuinely love using my camera to capture special places and moments and sharing them to inspire others to enjoy life and explore and experience as much around them as possible themselves.
