In Extremist Movie Debate, Ethan and Unpaid Intern Jeff’s true feelings about the movie do not matter. They flip a coin to decide who loves the movie and who hates it. They then debate it on the fly. This episode? Power Rangers.
Oftentimes, hilarity ensues (or just offensive arguments). As always, SPOILERS AHEAD.
Power Rangers [official trailer]
What is the filmmaker’s responsibility when it comes to reboots, especially when the original property has a large and loyal fan base? This week the gang mixes it up as Unpaid Intern Jeff steps into a debater role. He argues that Saban’s Power Rangers is trying to blend the innocuous feel of the nineties TV show with the gritty dark feel we tend to get in superhero movies now. The mixture does not work for him and he thinks the movie suffers for it. Ethan believes rebooting Saban’s Power Rangers with more of a Breakfast Club feel makes for a successful movie. He thinks the themes work well in an action movie made for young people and will help the viewers in their day-to-day lives.
