Instagram blogger and main brain behind Monsoon Spice, Sia Krishna, tells us all things Foodstagram related, how she got started, and the importance of doing the things you love most.
The Big Smoke: Hi, Sia! Your Instagram pics are fabulous. If for whatever reason you could only save three, which three would you save?
Sia Krishna: Thank you! I would save the following three Insta pics as my personal favorites as they have captured very special and beautiful moments of my life.
Getting to this point: Can you please tell our readers a little bit about yourself and how your Instagram came to be?
My name is Sia Krishna and I am a food stylist, photographer, recipe developer, and writer at Monsoon Spice. I was born and brought up in a coastal town of Mangalore in South India which is famous for its virgin beaches, red tiled houses, and gentle backwaters, and grew up in a house where the life revolved around food, love, laughter, and more food! I currently reside in a seaside town in Cornwall, UK, with my husband and a 6-year-old boy. I hold degrees in Computer Science Engineering and a MBA, but literature, writing, and photography are my true loves and passions. After working full-time as an IT professional in a very exciting organization for over eight years, I quit my day job to enjoy small things in my life and am enjoying it to its fullest.
I created my Instagram account, @SiaKrishna, on a whim as a private account to document important moments of my life; motherhood, travel, inspirational stories, and, of course, food. With time, I made my account accessible to all and it has helped me connect with like-minded people around the world.
InstaMoments: What do you think is the main driver to people coming to your Instagram daily and following you?
I’d love to say it’s my charming personality and sense of humor, but I know that it’s the food pictures with recipes that attract most people, followed by the little stories and the anecdotes of my daily life as a mother, home décor enthusiast, tree hugger, and food stylist and photographer.
InstaStories: What is the main story you like to tell through your images?
Being a food blogger at Monsoon Spice, most of the photographs are about food in general, from ingredients shot to the finished dish. I also love to share photographs that give little insight into my daily life; behind the scenes of food blogging, things that connect to my roots and evoke memories, challenges and joys of motherhood, my home, travel tales, things and people who inspire me and stories of cooking, photographing and eating the food that I grow in my little garden.
InstaFans: What is the worst way for someone to try and get your attention on Instagram, and what is the best way?
The worst way to get my attention is by tagging me in completely unrelated posts and by following me and unfollowing me and then repeating the same thing over and over! It’s just not a respectful way to try to grab my attention.
The best way is by building natural rapport through genuine, engaging, and witty comments. People with a good sense of humor always get a huge thumbs up.
