The ‘Weak’ in Politics: #USElections Wrap-Up November 15th

On Friday night, Paris saw over 120 people killed and 350 injured through a number of systematic terrorist attacks. Both Australia and the U.S. marked vigils for the victims, Facebook launched a safety check function and the hashtag #PorteOuverte was used to help Parisians find safe havens. This also occurred just prior to the Democratic Debate which was held today at Drake University in Iowa. DownUnder-Current US will discuss this debate in detail during a #PollieWatch podcast this week.

Takeaway comments from some Republican and Democratic candidates in response to the attacks in Paris include:

Donald Trump: “And I will tell you what—you can say what you want, if they had guns, if our people had guns, if they were allowed to carry, it would have been a much, much different situation.”

Carly Fiorina: “I think it reminds us that when the United States of America is not leading, the world is a more dangerous and a more tragic place…Our abandonment of Iraq permitted ISIS to begin seizing territory.”

Marco Rubio: “This is a clash of civilizations,” he said. “And either they win or we win.”

Dr. Ben Carson: “If we’re going to be bringing 200,000 people over here from that region — if I were one of the leaders of the global jihadist movement and I didn’t infiltrate that group of people with my people, that would be almost malpractice.”

Ted Cruz: “We need to immediately declare a halt to any plans to bring refugees that may have been infiltrated by ISIS to the United States. We need to redouble our efforts to prevent ISIS agents from penetrating our nation by other means.”

Hillary Clinton: “No terrorist attack will ever dim the spirit of the French people or our common commitment to the democratic values we share.”

Bernie Sanders: “We are all horrified by the cowardly attacks against innocent civilians in Paris.”

Martin O’Malley: “I was the first person on this stage to say that we should accept the 65,000 Syrian refugees that were fleeing the sort of murder of ISIS, and I believe that that needs to be done with proper screening.”

Jeb Bush: “This is the war of our time,” Bush said. “And we have to be serious in engaging and creating a strategy to confront it and take it out.”

“That he’d go bankrupt for the fourth time.”

Heard at Republican campaign HQ

“I don’t know, we haven’t received any response yet to the missing person alert.”

Heard at Democrat campaign HQ
“I see Bill reckons he’ll be the first-ever First Guy in the White House.”
“He shouldn’t be too sure of himself, I understand Hillary is yet to decide how she’s going to vote.”

Heard in Congress
“George W’s dad reckons he was led astray by Cheney and Rumsfeld.”
“Thank goodness it wasn’t Madonna.”
