CopperCab, made famous by the video “Gingers Do Have Souls” has come out as transgender via a YouTube clip. The internet has since responded. Dearie me.
Back in 2010, we chortled at the sight of a specky, redheaded bundle of raw ginger venting spleen in some nondescript back alley on the vicissitudes of wearing a crown of red. While we may have laughed guiltily at his woe then, today we found the floor.
For Claire, as she is now known, has documented her transition via YouTube, not in the ranted tone made famous by the cold hands of the Internet, no, rather the empathetic statements of a choice made and the reasons why.
In the words uttered by herself:
“I know a lot of you are going to make fun of me. I know a lot of you are going to think that I’m joking. But this is the hardest video I’ve ever made. Because I’m not.
I haven’t made a video in five months because I’ve been going through HRT because I’m transgender. I’m trying to be strong. … I’m not going to pretend anymore. This will probably be my last video on YouTube, but I felt like I needed to do this because I need to face this and … you need to know who I am.
I hope you can all learn to accept me, even though most of you probably won’t. This is me. My name is Claire. And this is the beginning of my life. Wish me luck.”
Needless to say, the comments underneath the video, well, they’re not very supporting indeed.
Ranging from “It’s cool if you’re Trans but boy or girl you need to work on your makeup game there is no excuse for that much blush” to “even if you turn into a girl you still have no soul” all the way to things that I won’t print, it’s a large shake of the head and a hopeless “dearie doo” from us here at The Big Smoke.
