Four Presents: Bésame Cosmetics, a Force Bringing Back Vintage Flair

Hello, Gabriela. Can you tell us about you and your brand?

My name is Gabriela Hernandez. I started Bésame Cosmetics in 2004; it was an offshoot of the design work that I was doing. You could almost say it became a business accidentally. I thought it would be more personal and niche, yet ended up becoming popular. We have worked with Sephora and Disney to produce collections and our products have been used in many TV and film shows.


What inspired you to start Bésame, how did it all begin?

I was a designer and this was meant to be a side project that I wanted to develop. I used to remember my grandmother’s makeup, how it was refillable and vintage. Little did I know there would be a substantial market for it.


How would you describe the philosophy behind Bésame?

The philosophy behind it was always to make the best products that are not price-driven. This means we make the price after the product is made; our main focus is the quality. We also pride ourselves in being consumer-driven. Our market is more for middle-aged women.



What have been the biggest challenges you have faced in the industry?

Cash flow. For many years this was a problem for us because we never had an investor. So, to keep our business going and having upfront money was difficult.


What do you think are the key trends in the beauty industry at the moment/in the near future? 

I feel that the younger generation is starting to catch on, but the older generations are more into cleaner beauty. They care more about what the label says and less about the trending color.


How do you see the future of vintage-inspired makeup and the demand for sustainable and cruelty-free ingredients?

Vintage is the inspiration. Before, no one cared for vintage, it seemed uncool and old. Now, it’s starting to come back into style. Everyone is doing throwbacks to different decades. I think it’s becoming more popular because of its authenticity and the fact that it is cruelty-free.


What is your favorite Bésame product?

Red velvet lipstick every day. It can be used for the office, a dinner party, or even a romantic night out.
